Signal Mountain House

After renting for a year then getting a sweet tax return thanks to hiring an accountant to do our taxes (one secret to a happy marriage) we were able to purchase a cool 1940’s ranch on Signal Mountain. The Sig, as we called it, was an interesting place to live. We compare it to Mayberry. Nice sidewalks, a community pool, and good schools mean the neighborhood attracts lots of young families and others looking for a peaceful, quiet life (peaceful and quiet after the white-knuckle drive up one of two curvy, steep mountain roads). Sometimes a little too quiet, but that’s in the eye of the beholder.

Little House on Signal Mountain

We weren’t necessarily aiming for Signal, but we found a great deal on a house that needed a new kitchen and some minor cosmetic work. Thus began our first real renovation…and it was a doozy. Amelia spent most of her time stressing about whether Tony was qualified to remove walls, what the quality of work would be, and what it would all cost. Tony spent most of his time reassuring Amelia, ignoring Amelia, and then giving Amelia side projects to distract her from her stress. The next few posts cover our major projects in the Signal house, which turned out to be a great investment. Here are a few quick projects we were able to knock out up front:

Fireplace: We scrubbed, and I mean SCRUBBED, the stone around this fireplace, then Tony re-grouted the edges to clean up the look. Amelia painted the brass surround with black paint made for metal, which updated the look a bit.
The re-grout.
There were some funky paint colors in this place. This room became Tony’s office after a LOT of paint and complete replacement of the baseboards.
A nice navy paint and fresh new baseboards made this space masculine and cozy. We eventually replaced the butterfly fan, too.
We painted all the common spaces gray, which brought some unity to the home and freshened things up.
Living room before, with the prior tenants’ furnishings. We painted this space, fixed up the fireplace, and replaced the window coverings. After adding our own furniture, we loved this room!
Our pretty “after.” We spent A LOT of time in this room and were happy to have given it our own touch.
