Bedroom Bests

Every night between 9 and 10, Amelia retires to the peaceful bedroom to watch Real Housewives or some other drivel while Tony stays up to watch zombies and such with Dottie. This is Amelia’s favorite part of the day, and favorite room in the house. A cluttered bedroom is hard to sleep in, don’t you think? We’ve tried to keep it simple and light with storage for the things we don’t want to see.

Bed: I lusted after this French Academie bed from Restoration Hardware for a loooong time before purchasing, and we love it! It’s a clean look and sturdily built. It’s also reallllly heavy, so moving it isn’t fun.

Tres chic! $671-871

Sheets: I love a percale sheet! They’re what I’d call “crispy”; they are stiff but soft, and they stay so cool in the summer. Get them out of the dryer immediately or they’ll wrinkle pretty badly. I keep an eye out for them on sale and have scored a couple sets cheap through LL Bean and Target. These are available at Target for about $35; we have them, and they’re my second-favorite sheets.

My LL Bean percale sheets are my favorite and have lasted a long time. They’re worth the price.

Crispy goodness. $169

Bedding: We used to sleep with a down comforter but I got tired of being hot all the time in Alabama. So now, I use a quilt, plus another quilt if it’s cold. I love the Company Store for quilts and shams; they last forever and wash well, and if you’re flexible, they have great sales where you can mix and match your bed into oblivion.

Our quilt is similar to this one. $189

Hamper: We keep one in the bedroom for individual clothing; ours has two sides, so we each have our own individual bin within. In this house, each adult does his or her own laundry. This way, one only has to know which of their own items are likely to shrink, or need hand-washing, etc. This one is very similar to ours; looks really nice and the interior cotton bags can be removed and carried to the laundry. $70

Sideboard/entertainment center: We originally found this on sale at IKEA and used it in our Signal Mountain house for our TV and record player. We didn’t need it as living room furniture in our Southside house, so we re-purposed it for the bedroom. We do keep a TV and cable box on it, with folded linens on the shelves and I store purses and such in the glass cabinets. Sadly, they don’t make it anymore.

Not ours, but you get the idea.

Blinds: Our bedroom is on an alley, so we need window privacy. I also have trouble waking up in the morning, so I DO NOT need blackout shades; I need something that filters natural light so my brain knows it’s time to get up. We’ve used Select Blinds for all window covering purchases in both homes, because the prices are reasonable and blinds can be made in almost any size.

They let the light in, but keep prying eyes away. $30 and up

Alarm Clock: I have a love/hate relationship with this item. It’s complicated to use but it’s the best alarm clock I’ve had. It begins lighting up a few minutes before the alarm goes off, so it’s meant to trick your brain into thinking the sun is rising. My brain is smart and resistant to trickery, but it usually works. You can set it to wake you up to the sound of birds. Bonus: any time you hear birds, whether or not they’re coming from the alarm, your brain will think “alarm!!!” and you’ll be struck with mild to moderate anxiety. $38

Someday we’ll post pics of the actual room, but right now it’s really messy and I don’t have time to clean it up. So…someday.
